The Wyld Hunt

The Wyld Hunt was one of many post-Old Multiverse series concepts that sort of uniquely evolved through the background of several other setting and series concepts. Many of these characters were either background characters in the supernatural side of various hero settings, or were intended to be the "magic-themed" members of various teams. At some point, they just sort of developed their own continuity independent of whatever other hero stuff was going on, and I realized that didn't really fit in a standard superhero universe.

Ergo, this sort of became my first dedicated urban fantasy/modern fantasy type world, with no connection to a superhero universe proper. Although, rechecking these notes, I see that I still had them be tangentially related to an version of Tabitha Cain universe, which sort of still fits, given that at the time , given there were a couple figures in the Wyld Hunt lore that were part of the Tabitha Cain stories at the time. Eventually, however, I realized I didn't actually want to write a bunch of tedious "monster of the week" short stories, so, like most of my series concepts, this never really got off the ground.

I did, however, use several of these characters in co-writes and forum RPGs, so I can at least say some of these guys got some actual mileage in the written word, unlike a lot of characters I made concepts for, but ended up never using.

BACKSTORY
In the two thousand years since Tabitha Cain forced the Elder Gods to remove much of their influence, as well as most of their creations, from Earth, humanity has moved on. Technology brought power to the masses and the horrible creatures of the night were driven back by increasingly deadlier weapons.  Magic was left behind due its difficult and often impractical learning curve. By the time the later 1800s rolled around, the only authentic practitioners of magic were those who were innately born with magical talent or empowered by accident, and monsters had become virtually extinct. Humanity was on the fast track to a bright future ahead of them, with science as their new beacon. Soon enough, by the mid 1900s, people practically dismissed the supernatural as little more than an archaic notion.

This, however, suited the monsters and mages of the world just fine. Humanity was letting its guard down. Their technology was making them soft and lazy, easy pickings. And though they spread like wildfire across the world, there were always nooks and crannies in which the predatory forces of the supernatural could hide. Some simply tucked themselves away in dark allies and sewers or in the increasingly shrinking wilds. Others insinuated themselves into human society, hiding in plain site.

Thankfully, those with ill intent were not the only ones who retained their supernatural power. Over the decades, empowered champions and defenders rise to protect humanity from the shadows they have forgotten to fear.

THE WYLD HUNT
The Wyld Hunt is a network of operatives from around the world who dedicate themselves to battling monsters. Most operate either solo or with a partner, but all have teamed up at least a few times over the years. The Wyld Hunt network allows them to exchange information and arrange team ups as necessary, ensuring strength in numbers and knowledge, despite the distance between its members.

JOACHIM CHULLAIN
Age: 227
Race/Species: Human with Demon Ancestry
Nationality: Portuguese/Spanish
Relations: Usagi (daughter by Spider), Sandora Chullain (son by Jenna Pure), Jenna Pure (ex-lover), Raquel Della Riva (lover), Cecilly Fenrir (lover), Spider (ex-lover)
Powers: fast regeneration, immortality, mystic senses, ten times peak human speed, strength, and durability; uses “Dark Chi” to create fields of darkness, short range force blasts (can be conducted through melee weapons), can weaken and disorient opponents, blind mystic and psychic senses, interact with and harm intangibles such as spirits and elementals, and sense the presence of other beings and mystical phenomenon; has the potential for vast powers of necromancy, but refuses to use it other than for communication with spirits and ghosts
Weapons: uses a black katana enchanted to be indestructible, cut through most earthly substances, and can harm intangibles and elementals
Skills: vast occult knowledge, swordsmanship, charisma, leadership, improvisation, speaks French, Portuguese, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian, Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, and English; while decent with prep, is usually best at maximizing the resources he has available at any given time, leaving many to wonder if he actually plans things out, or makes them up as he goes along
Personality: Joachim is a swashbuckling hero, and sometimes comes across as a little goofy, though passionate. Rarely ever shaken, his youthful features are betrayed by the wisdom and experience in his eyes. Joachim has a serious side he only usually shows to those who get to know him, not because he has anything to hide, but because there’s no need to burden strangers with his troubles. Joachim has great charisma, and can often rally others to a cause, though once a common goal is accomplished, he does not usually push to keep a group assembled.
History: In the late 1700’s, Joachim Chullain operated as a bandit, attacking travelers and caravans on the forest roads and mountain paths.  One day, his band made the mistake of attacking what appeared to be a small, secluded village. When they raided it, however, they discovered it was being attacked by a band of feral vampires, led by a recently reawakened Shokoract. Joachim’s band was killed, but Shokoract sensed a seed of darkness with Joachim, which he activated, threatening to turn Joachim into an acolyte of Khal Morte, and unlocking his dormant magical potential. However, just at that time, the mysterious demon hunter Rolante appeared and slew the entire pack of vampires. Rolante was about to finish off Joachim, but saw that he was fighting his turning. Rolante instead spared his life, curing the vampirism. Joachim was moved by this act of mercy, and vowed to become a man of decency, to protect the weak and innocent from monsters and criminals alike. Rolante sensed his sincerity, and gave him his enchanted katana as a symbol of his faith in Joachim’s spirit.

Joachim is largely the one responsible for the creation of the Wyld Hunt, as many of the organization’s members are allies he has acquired throughout the decades. He has also been responsible for forming several temporary teams of superhumans to deal with larger threats. Two particular groups are notable, one being the Merry Men, who operated in Chicago in the 1920’s to halt the advance of G’Norrim the Goblyn King; the second was Vigil, who operated out of Cyrene City in 1995 to stop the machinations of Thaddeus Cain.

During the fight against G’Norrim, Joachim was almost turned into a powerful monster by G’Norrim’s magic, but he was saved by Jenna, who burned out almost all her magical power to save him. Joachim and Jenna spent the next forty years together, even having a son together, but eventually parted ways. Currently, Joachim continues to act as wandering hero throughout the world, though primarily throughout Europe and America.

RAQUEL DELLA RIVA
Age: 137
Race/Species: Human with Fairy Ancestry
Nationality: French
Relations: Cyrilla Della Riva (daughter by a demi-human), Joachim Chullain (lover), Cecilly Fenrir (lover), Michael Iblis (ex-lover)
Skills: staff fighting, meditation, psychology, nursing, military tactics; speaks German, French, Spanish, English, Italian, and Russian
Powers: longevity, minor photokinesis, can make small and basic solid light constructs, healing, mystic senses, ten times peak human speed, strength, and durability
Weapons: makes light based weapons
Personality: Loving, understanding, strong-willed, and caring. Calm and level-headed, she provides a voice of reason and soothing comfort for those in need. Mother, sister, lover, friend, she's always there for her loved ones.
Backstory: When she was very young, Raquel lost her parents in a shipwreck, and she went to live with her aunt. Her "aunt", it turned out, was actually a fairy maiden who had been her great-great-grandmother. When she was eight, Raquel nearly died of malaria, and her aunt, not knowing what else to do, used a magic scepter to heal her. This awoke Raquel's dormant fairy blood, awaking her powers. Since that time, Raquel has worked sporadically as a monster hunter; she is more of a part time hunter, as the needs of family and sometimes service to her country take priority.

When she was 42, Raquel had a one night stand with a demi-human, whom she was never able to find again. Nevertheless, she had a daughter by him, who grew up helping Raquel in her hunts.

Raquel is one of the few members of the Wyld Hunt who maintains strong connections to normal human society. During World Wars I and II, she fought with the French Free Forces on the front lines and in the trenches, out of devotion to her fellow countrymen, believing that human evils must be addresses as much as supernatural ones. Raquel currently owns several museums of history throughout France, and mainly serves as an intelligence gatherer for the Wyld Hunt, though she will still go into the field as needed.

JENNA PURE
Age: 97
Race/Species: Human with Angel Ancestry
Nationality: American
Relations: Sandora (son with Joachim), Joachim (ex-lover)
Skills: gunslinger, tracker, hunter, investigation, martial arts; speaks Spanish and English
Powers: low healing magic, can create bullets of “holy” magic, five times human speed and reflexes, shaman magic (commune with and summon minor spirits), longevity
Weapons: twin revolvers, special elemental “caster” gun
Personality: Jenna is a calm and reserved woman, who has the easy grace of an expert fighter, and a woman of the world. She has seen many things in life, and few things surprise her any more, though she still relishes life’s simple pleasures. She is focused and dedicated to justice, though she is flexible when circumstances demand it of her.
Backstory: Jenna was the daughter of a sheriff in a small town in Texas. She wished to grow up strong and be a lawman, like her father. However, when she was young, she began to manifest powerful healing magics, and she considered instead becoming a doctor. However, when she was fourteen, her town was attacked by a swarm of feral vampires, zombies, and were-creatures, led by Shokoract. Hot on their trail was the mysterious demon hunter Rolante, who quickly slaughtered most of the monsters, and battled Shokoract to a mutual defeat, killing him once and for all.  Jenna tried to use her magic to help him fight off the remaining creatures and tried to heal him. Rolante, however, was too far damaged, and instead gave Jenna his special caster gun to finish the job of defeating the monster packs leader. Jenna managed this, but Rolante was dead by that point. Swearing to fight on in his stead, Jenna dedicated herself to monster hunting.

In 1920, Jenna became caught up in the events of G’Norrim’s invasion, and joined Joachim’s Merry Men. When G’Norrim tried to use his powers to unleash Joachim’s inner darkness, Jenna sacrificed nearly all of her magic to prevent Joachim’s transformation into a monster. In so doing, she permanently burned out almost all her magic potential, thus dooming her to be stuck as a low level healer mage at best.

Jenna and Joachim became lovers, and spent forty years as a couple, even having a son whom they raised in the business of monster hunting. However, their relationship didn’t last, and the two parted ways, though they did so on good terms. Jenna stayed in America while Joachim returned to Europe.

Despite traveling to different parts of the continent, Jenna is now once again based out of Texas, and is one of the few members of the Wyld Hunt continuously dedicated to America.

She helped protect them from bandits and wild animals, and occasionally found herself in combat with monsters as well. Cecilly eventually split off from the group to travel on her own, and thusly has had several encounters with Wyld Hunt members Joachim and Raquel. She doesn’t really make a point to actively hunt for monsters, but she will take a case if she is aware of monsters hunting humans in an area; however, she also sometimes will let a monster be if they are just trying to survive in the world. Being a hybrid of two “monsters” herself, she has much more sympathy for them than most Wyld Hunt members.

However, while she enjoys being a part of human society, she doesn’t feel completely attached to humans.
Backstory: Cyrilla was raised by Raquel having never known her father. Although Raquel wished to protect her from danger, Cyrilla was a mischievous and independently minded girl even from an early age, and she more or less just invited herself along to watch her mother’s hunts. She soon began to help Raquel, and started to manifest strong powers of shamanistic magic. She spent time in Africa training in shamanism, before returning to France and beginning her own adventures. While there, he also fought his share of monsters, as the monastery was the home of several sacred artifacts coveted by demons. Eventually, however, Matthias left Tibet when he received news that his mother had passed away, and went off to find his sister, who had never returned to the village. Along the way, he joined forces with Joachim Chullain during one of his missions, and thusly reunited with Cecilly when Joachim was able to track her down. The bullets travel at light speed, and are invisible to all forms of detection; they can only be blocked by very specific shielding spells which are mostly useless for all other forms of protection. The guns have been modified to kill corporeal beings by solidifying the phantom bullets inside an intended corporeal targets vital organs after passing through all obstacles. The guns, once bonded to a person, will teleport to their hands instantly when needed.
Personality: Usagi is cold, callous, and emotionless. While at first she was uncertain of what to do with herself, she eventually became obsessed with becoming a demon.
Backstory: When the assassin Spider had a one-night stand with Joachim, she became pregnant. She hid this from Joachim and immediately gave up the baby to her assassin’s guild. The baby was raised by the guild and named Usagi. Usagi’s training caused her to manifest her powers at a young age, and these abilities helped her become one of the guilds deadliest members by the age of fourteen. However, during a mission in China, she encountered Joachim Chullain, and the two immediately recognized one another as father and daughter. Usagi was thrown by this knowledge and seeing her father’s heroism. For the first time questioned her actions as an assassin. She abandoned the guild, and moved to America, where she joined Joachim’s group Vigil to combat the machinations of Lillith. While a member of that group, she started an extremely brief fling with her teammate Gabriel Conner, deciding she wanted to experience actual intimacy with another human being.

She found she didn’t much care for the experience. Trying to be a hero and trying to feel emotional bonds only left her confused and conflicted. After Lillith was defeated, Vigil disbanded, and Usagi disappeared. Joachim tried to track her down, but to no avail. Usagi wandered aimlessly for a while, but the nagging doubts in her mind would not go away. She pleaded with the assassin’s guild to take her back, regardless of the cost, but they would not have her, since she had killed the members who had been sent to bring her back when she was part of Vigil. Usagi began to lose herself in her anguish, and she became unbalanced. She began to blame Joachim for ruining her life, and Gabriel for implanting these reckless emotions inside her mind. She hunted down and killed Gabriel; when this only increased her anxiety, she went after her father.

Joachim tried to reason with her, telling her that it was the demon blood in her veins driving her mad, that Joachim’s own potential darkness had been passed onto her. This, then, gave Usagi a new purpose in life: she would dedicate herself to becoming a demon. She sought various methods to make this so. She would kill anyone who got in her way, and in Joachim’s case, she would actively make him suffer in retaliation for his interference. One of the last times Joachim stopped her from completing a ritual of demonic empowerment, Usagi tracked down and killed his son, Sandora, and nearly killed Jenna. That was the final straw, and Joachim eventually tracked her down and killed her in a final confrontation.

Her astral form hugged his and she pulled him close.

Thavian awoke a day later, discovering that he was now inside Amara’s body, and his own body was dead. What’s more, he now possessed Amara’s powers, but despite quickly adapting to their use, he could find no trace of Amara; it seemed as though her spirit simply dissipated into nothing. Thavian attempted to contact both his and her family, but this proved to be of no help; his own family did not believe him, and instead blamed him for their son’s murder (thinking he was actually still Amara who was pretending to be crazy to cover up the crime). Amara’s family, meanwhile, didn’t think their daughter was a murder, but they did think she had gone insane. Unable to gain support from either of them, Thavian fled to Europe, eventually settling down in Spain, where he encountered Joachim Chullain and Raquel Della Riva. Gregory served as Joachim’s “side kick” for a while, and joined him as a member of the Merry Men in Chicago. There, he met Umi, a Japanese Ice Maiden, and the two fell in love. After the battle against G’Norrim ended, and the Merry Men disbanded, Umi and Greg travelled around for a while before finally settling down in the hidden demi-human village in the Slavic regions, eventually having two children. She joined Joachim’s Merry Men shortly afterwards, and her relationship with Gregory grew through that time, helping him to control his feral wolf side. Afterwards, the two travelled some more as a couple, and settled down in the demi-human village of the Slavic regions, where they had two children. Umi eventually died due to natural causes, as extended travel outside the frozen lands of her hidden village had greatly shortened her lifespan to only a mere 200 years.

When his powers manifested, Gabriel took it upon himself to beat down the gangs and push out the drug rings to make the neighborhoods safe. Joachim claimed that he had been tracking a new type of drug which imbued the user with enhanced powers, but in return, slowly ate away at their soul. Joachim and Gabriel joined forces, and quickly formed the temporary team Vigil to fight against this threat, which turned out to be the machinations of the great witch Lillith. During this time, Gabriel started a fling with Usagi, but she broke it off soon after. When Lillith was defeated, Vigil disbanded and Gabriel became a vigilante to protect his city from crime in general, mainly to deal with the backlash of the drug being withdrawn from the underground market. Thaddeus quickly came to rule the cult by the end of his teen years, but ultimately was just using them in his pursuit of power, which, thanks to his bloodline, he was quick to amass. He eventually unlocked the secret history of the world, and was galvanized by this knowledge to find a way to return the world to the mythical age of gods and monsters it once was. He was stopped by Joachim and his team at the time, Vigil, though this partially required using a summoning spell to call forth Tabitha Cain herself form the past to put down her wayward son.
